Project Hope Delivers Extensive Water Reuse Capacity in a Data Center Hotspot

The Challenge

Richmond, Virginia has emerged as one of the fastest growing data center markets in the world, with new facilities being built at an unprecedented rate. Hyperscale data centers each require up to 2 million gallons of water per day (MGD) for cooling. This places intense strain on the James River Watershed & Drainage Basin, which already struggles to support the growing population of nearly 3 million residents in the region.

Without a new approach to water stewardship and infrastructure financing, the combined water demand of data centers, local industry, and a growing population risks overwhelming capacity, jeopardizing long-term sustainability and future availability of water across the region.

The Solution

To ensure water resilience and reduce dependency on the already strained municipal water system, Project Hope is introducing a state-of-the-art industrial water reuse system with capacity to produce 7 MGD of industrial grade city water at a major industrial manufacturing facility in the region. By reusing treated wastewater, the system reduces demand on the local municipal water system while improving downstream water quality in the James River and Chesapeake Bay.

R3 Sustainability is leading the charge on Project Hope. However, due to extremely low water rates in the region, R3 and the manufacturing facility’s owner cannot fund Project Hope by themselves. That is where Blu Diamond’s water offsets come in.
